Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection - Issues, Remake Potential, and Optimization
  • Battlefront Classic Collection faced a disastrous release with minimal servers, technical glitches, and a huge file size impacting the player experience right away.
  • A complete reimagining of the original games might have rescued Battlefront Classic Collection and provided a more satisfying experience for enthusiasts.
  • A total remake would have allowed for additional enhancements, longevity, and regular content updates, potentially ensuring the survival of the Battlefront franchise.

The Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection has not been well-received, largely due to the chaos that unfolded on its initial launch day. While it's uncertain if the game's myriad problems could have been avoided with a different approach, there is a possibility that a fresh interpretation of the original games could have salvaged Battlefront Classic Collection.

Battlefront Classic Collection has been plagued by issues, particularly during its release. When the game went live, its multiplayer mode had only three servers available for the thousands of players trying to join. Moreover, the game was riddled with numerous bugs, a 30 FPS lock, and an enormous 60-70 GB file size—all of which immediately dampened player enthusiasm. Similar optimization challenges were encountered last year with the PC launch of Jedi: Survivor, but Battlefront Classic Collection lacks the excuse of significant original content.

Star Wars: Battlefront Classic Collection Should've Opted for a Full Remake

The critical failure of Battlefront Classic Collection not only tarnishes the reputation of Star Wars games in general but also harms the struggling Battlefront franchise. DICE's Battlefront 2 faced widespread criticism for its monetization practices—and even though the situation has improved and the game is enjoyed by some, its player base continues to dwindle. Instead of delivering a fresh multiplayer experience that evokes nostalgia for the classic Battlefront games, the franchise is once again alienating players. If the aim was to create a new Battlefront game that excites old fans, a complete remake would have been the better path forward.

A Battlefront Remake Could Have Enabled More Enhancements and Greater Longevity

Battlefront Classic Collection did introduce some improvements to the original Battlefront games—but even if it had been well-received, it would have remained constrained by its original concept. A remaster of this nature could only offer minor graphical upgrades, improved online functionality, and a bit of extra content since fans desire a sense of preservation; those attracted by nostalgia seek to relive old gameplay in an authentic manner with modern conveniences.

However, a thorough remake that constructs everything from scratch opens up a plethora of possibilities. If this approach had been taken, Battlefront Classic Collection could have included a complete visual transformation and allowed for the integration of more new content. This would have justified its price (higher than the combined cost of the original games, both of which are now approximately 20 years old) to a greater extent. Some argue that this iteration of Classic Collection would simply become another entry in the modern Battlefront series, but a scaled-down experience that still captures all the essence of the original games would offer a significantly different gameplay than any potential Battlefront 3.

Regarding the modern-era Battlefront games, a full remake of Classic Collection would have been more conducive to receiving content updates. This would have been a strategic move to sustain the Battlefront franchise, as it would have provided a multiplayer experience that remained evergreen. It would have engaged fans with the series in the absence of a Battlefront 3 or any other Star Wars multiplayer release.

A Fresh Remake Could Have Addressed Optimization Challenges

While the precise causes of major optimization issues like a bloated file size, bugs, frame-rate limitations, inadequate server support, and other controversies surrounding Battlefront Classic Collection are unknown, a game that reimagined the originals from scratch would have had a better chance of identifying such issues. At the very least, it would have necessitated a longer development cycle that could have involved more quality assurance testing.
